Austrian Kaffeehäuser

Serving coffee since 1683 the coffee houses of Vienna have been included on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list since November 2011.

The coffee houses are a place where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill.

They are every bit deserving of this award; and are an experience ‘must’. Viennese coffee culture is steeped in tradition – every coffee is still served on a tray with a glass of water, which the waiter will top up for free long after you have finished your coffee; so sit awhile (or longer) and experience the serene composure of the day in one of Vienna’s many architecturally beautiful buildings.

Couples sit over coffee for hours, for ten years. A good marriage, you think. No, good coffee. Alfred Polgar
